The Top Ways to Soothe a Sunburn

As we all know, prevention is the best way to manage sunburns—after all, if they never happen in the first place, no harm done! But even the best of us are susceptible to neglecting sunscreen, not wearing protective clothing, or accidentally using that sunscreen bottle that expired two years ago.

lotionSunburns may not seem like a big deal in the moment, but they can add up to issues in the future ranging from premature skin aging, to skin cancer and melanomas. After all, a sunburn is the skin’s direct response to overexposure of radiation from the sun.

So you have a nasty sunburn. What now? Your first step should be pain management. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Ibuprofen can help, but anything put directly on the skin will give you immediate relief. For some immediate and easy relief, either take a cool bath or shower, or wet a towel and make a cold compress. Stay away from using soap on your burn, as it can often be too harsh. An oatmeal bath can be a soothing home remedy if you want something in the water with you.

Anti-inflammatories such as cortisone cream can help calm the burn a bit, but will not help overall with the sunburn. Aloe vera is a very popular product as well. You can either use aloe straight from the plant or buy a bottle of the cream or gel. Make sure the aloe solution you use does not contain alcohol, which is very drying.

Keep your sunburn hydrated! Products such as Epionce’s Renewal Enriched Body Lotion and other gentle lotions work well to renew your skin and keep the healing process up. If the burn is on your face, make sure to use face-specific creams, as they are gentler and better suited for the skin there. And remember, not only should your outsides stay hydrated, but your insides too. Drink lots of water during your recovery period.
